current hobby:

collage

Free memorabilia - like ticket stubs, napkins, and stickers - have long been my favorite keepsakes. Occasionally, I have been known to paste them into journals and make small collages, but it wasn’t until this last year, when I made a gift for my sister (because collage is her really fun hobby, too), did I have focused interest on learning and experimenting with it more. I recently began dabbling into magazine cutouts and photoshop, and am having a ton of fun learning new programs and techniques.

Most of the collages I make are physical, using magazines, scissors, glue and tape. I usually find a color combination that I like, and then search through what I have to find pieces that fit. A great lesson to take away from collage is to embrace restraints. It’s definitely important to follow the creative flow, but limiting the number of resources I work with (magazines, washi tape, markers, etc.) can inspire me to find creative solutions (which is half the fun of hobbies, imo). More tools can be nice, but there is such a thing as too much.

Earlier this year, while helping my parents move, I spent several months in a retirement community for people aged 55 and older. I was a regular at water aerobics there, and have fond memories of learning about favored Corelle china patters, grandkids, and protest strategies.

Five days a week, at 8am, bluetooth speakers would pump pre-recorded instructions out to the pool deck. Classics like “heel to bun!” “feels good in the shoulders!” and “abs tight!” were daily staples that still play in my head.

I made this in honor of the ladies I befriended, and it was my first shot at photoshop since 2007. The PIXimperfect Youtube course has been really helpful! If I ever decide to finish it, I’ll switch out the bottom left font and create more contrast.

I tend to make or thrift gifts. For mother’s day, I birthed forth a card and handheld reminders of some classic, oft-referenced vocal faux pas my mother has made over the years. Good intention and poor execution - these probably read a little rough, but they were all said (and made) with humor and without ill intentions.
